Nursery Operations Manager

Job Function Summary:

Manage the operations of plant nursery including staffing the department, creating work schedules and assigning duties, building relationships and meeting with customers and vendors, developing and overseeing safety protocols and ensuring high quality output.


·         Manage the day-to-day operations of the plant nursery

·         Assign work schedules and duties to nursery staff and supervise their work

·         Oversee nursery staffing and train employees in plant care techniques

·         Work with plant buyer and horticulturist to determine optimal care and growing conditions for each plant

·         Organize and arrange nursery layout in zones with coordination of nursery purchasing agent

·         Supervise all horticultural functions related to inventory for the nursery including pruning, weeding, fertilization, irrigation, disease and pest control, and monitoring of general plant care

·         Ensure Nursery grounds (including roads, drainage, fence line, etc.) are maintained properly including spraying for weeds, removing overgrowth, keeping drainage clean, removing dead branches and mowing

·         Ensure proper maintenance of irrigation system including wells, pipes, risers, spot-spitters and irrigation clocks

·         Ensure proper maintenance of vehicles and equipment

·         Stay apprised of weather conditions (hurricanes, freezes, etc.) and adjust plant care and storage accordingly

·         Coordinate plant orders and deliveries for customers and daily crew load-outs

·         Oversee periodic inventory counts

·         Monitor time and attendance records; make necessary adjustments and responds to payroll questions

·         Complete team member reviews as required by Company

·         Maintain and build relationships with suppliers and customers

·         Work with finance to understand the operating budget and work within parameters set for operating and labor expenses

·         Maintain a safe, secure and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures while complying with legal regulations

·         Willing and timely execution of other duties as delegated by leadership

Minimum Requirements:

·         Minimum 5 (five) years’ experience in horticultural or botanical industry

·         Degree in horticulture, agriculture or botany preferred but not required

·         Strong uderstanding of plant materials and installation procedures

·         Detail oriented and able to manage competing priorities and multiple deadlines in a fast paced environment

·         Working knowledge of business accounting and P&L statements

·         Maintain business confidentiality and protect proprietary procedures and data

·         Familiar with regulatory and OSHA codes

·         Must have a high level of attention to detail and accuracy

·         Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
