Nursery Retail Associate

We are looking for hard working, customer-oriented individuals with a great personality to join our team. We require at least 1 year retail nursery experience with subtropical plants. Must be willing to follow directions and work Saturdays. This position requires you to work outside the majority of the day and be familiar with the horticulture / plants of this climate and region.

The primary responsibilities of the Retail and Nursery Associate are to maintain outstanding customer service, generate sales transactions, and support the operation and maintenance of the Retail Store/Nursery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Retail Store

1. Receive incoming calls; answer questions appropriately if possible, and route calls to appropriate staff members.

2. Ensure high levels of customer service by greeting and offering assistance to 41 Home & Garden Center customers.

3. Access customer needs and provide information on product features.

4. Be alert to opportunities to promote sales, advertise, and utilize marketing techniques to increase sales.

5. Process accurately and efficiently sales transactions.

6. Ensure that the sales floor is organized and clean.

7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Nursery

1. Serve customers, providing them with accurate information regarding plant characteristics and culture.

2. Help customers in making appropriate plant selections for the environmental conditions where the plants are to be placed.

3. Assist customers with solving growing problems to promote success with purchased plants.

4. Provide customers with correct pest and disease identification for routine problems, and then assist with selecting an effective control.

5. Maintain plants through a program of watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest control.

6. Create/maintain aesthetically pleasing plant displays using attractive plant combinations.

7. Receive plant orders as necessary.

8. Scout nursery plants routinely to find damaged, diseased, or infested plants.

9. After appropriate training and with proper supervision as needed, apply control measures to diseased or infested plants.

10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

1. Ability to use or learn basic computer systems (Square, Windows Suite a plus).

2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to read, write, and comprehend English. Ability to effectively communicate with customers, peers, and management. Ability to communicate on the phone with proper etiquette.

3. Ability recognize and acknowledge when customers arrive even if with another customer.

4. Ability to work as part of a team and take initiative independent of direct supervision.

5. Enthusiastic, friendly, and energetic with a genuine desire to provide outstanding service.

6. Previous experience in retail, sales, customer service, and operating a cash register preferred.

7. Subtropical horticulture knowledge and experience (e.g. plant nursery, landscaping, and/or gardening) is required.

Work Environment:

The work environment for this position is both indoors and outdoors. Weather conditions may be challenging (heat, rain, and wind). Must be willing to work in a hot, humid environment. The noise and activity level in the work environment is usually quiet; however, at times the environment can become harried due to unexpected urgent projects and deadline demands. Must have a temperament to work constructively in high pressure situations.

Physical Requirements:

1. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

2. Must be able to stand for at least two consecutive hours, walk; use hands, talk and hear.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full time  position during the days of Monday through Saturday with a rotating schedule. Must be willing to work Saturdays.
