Sun Bulb Company, Inc., (selling under the Better-Gro® brand name) a leader in the garden products industry, is seeking an energetic, responsible growing professional to lead our growing operations for our organization headquartered in Arcadia, FL.

Vacancy Summary:

Our current Director of Growing Operations, in coordination with our CEO, has announced a retirement/transition plan, so we have begun a search for his eventual replacement. The individual we select will work closely with the current Director of Growing Operations for a period of 24 months to learn about all facets of our business, to gain specific knowledge in the growing and care for our specialty plants and to gain a nuanced understanding of maximizing growing yield and optimizing growing conditions for Orchids and other tropical plants.

 

Position Summary:

The Director of Growing Operations manages and leads a staff of 15-20 growers, assistant growers, quality control staff, and internal transport staff engaged in the growing, care and maintenance of the company’s horticultural products at 4 Florida statewide locations, that are produced for wholesale or retail sales.  

 

Individual Responsibilities:

-Discusses plant growing activities with other company Directors to plan for growing activities that are

consistent with planned production schedules and sales plans.

-Select plant varieties, source the same, coordinate shipments, schedule plantings, and oversee care through all growing cycles up to finished stage.

-Maintain pipeline of owned propagation material produced by lab partners to ensure adequate supply.

-Plans for space allocation based on production reports and planting schedules.

-Monitors growing conditions and oversees changes in humidity, moisture and temperature and

cultivation procedures to ensure conformance with quality control standards.

-Monitors plant development to maintain blemish free-foliage, and ascertain conditions such as leaf texture, bloom size and the existence of pests or disease; removing substandard or diseased plants to maintain quality standards.

-Determines rates of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides as required by the crops and

applies and/or directs the application of them.

-Develops growing procedures for new species in product line and new cultivation techniques.

-Maintains inventory of needed growing supplies such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and

fungicides.

-Maintains records of growing techniques and production; reviews records and reports to identify

trends and to forecast future space and production needs.

-Plans for and requests staff on a timely basis to ensure their availability during the high volume

growing seasons and schedule overtime as necessary.

-Schedules staff and assigns work; maintains personnel records and provides input into performance evaluations.

-Trains employees in growing techniques and activities.

-Maintains a current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies.

-Maintains an awareness of new state of the art equipment and provides input into equipment and facilities upgrades and replacement.

-Overall responsibility of general greenhouse and facility maintenance and repair.

-Provides pesticide and safety training to all employees and maintenance of records as required by Federal or State regulations.

 

Core Competencies

-Ability to calculate figures amounts, proportions, percentages and volume in relation to the application of fertilizers, chemicals and water.  

-Monitor the effects of fertilizers and chemicals on PH & electrical conductivity to maintain optimal water quality.

-Ability to use a PC and interpret/produce production reports.

-Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures.

-Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.

-Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, from employees and to customers.

-Ability to maintain comprehensive records of essential growing procedures, attributes and results.

-Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to interact with team members, other directors and customers

-Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions necessary to identify a wide variety of conditions such as plant diseases, existence of insects, etc.

-Have the knowledge and ability to identify major plant groups and be aware of their culture and growth traits.

-Adaptability and multi‐tasking; experience working in a fast moving environment.  

-Fosters positive working relationships.  

-Must be a team player and collaborator with ability to work independently.

-Ability to provide work direction and leadership to staff.

Individual Requirements:

-4 year degree in Horticulture or related field and 5 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

-Must understand the use of injectors, electrical conductivity and pH meters, and irrigation systems and controllers.

-Thorough knowledge of water lines and be aware of and monitor conditions such as ventilation, light conditions, temperature and humidity.

-Must have in depth knowledge of the safe handling and application of chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.

-Experience growing orchids ideal but not necessary.

 

Physical Demands

This position requires typical physical demands for agricultural labor, such as walking, extended periods of standing, reaching, stooping, squatting, lifting up to 50 lbs. and working with heavy equipment.

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this agricultural job.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, dirt and soils, potting media, fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals such as pesticides and fungicides; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Job Type: Salaried, Full-time

Occasional work may be necessary outside of normal work hours and on weekends. This position includes a complete package of benefits including subsidized heath insurance and 401K plan.
